What have you learned from your audience feedback?

Audience Feedback

Question 3

What we have taken from these two focus groups.

We decided that we would ask two different groups of people that were both in our target audience (A-Level student and GCSE student). We asked them a list of questions but left them quite open to ensure that we got a good idea of what they did and did not like.

Starting with what they did not like was mostly the same although it seemed to be a matter of opinion rather that a collective decision. The two main parts of the music video which some students disliked were fist the brake in the music and second the night time scenes (where the quality of the footage was lost). The gap in the music which was purely taken up with narrative was a definite challenging of standard conventions within the music video industry, so we expected that many viewers would may not like it. Some of the negative ways it was described were "lingering a bit too long" and "Random up to the rest of the video" this however, was only a handful of viewers and so overall we concluded that the 10 brake in music was a success. The reason in which most of the viewers did not like the darker scenes is because the quality of the footage has gone down. This unfortunately was something which we just had to accept as we did not have the relevant technology to allow us to deal with this problem. The viewers however seemed to understand this by saying "its to be expected".

On the other hand there were many positive things which our focus group viewers liked about the video. Some of the comments form the GCSE students which we received were "I enjoyed the cuts and the bits where it went changes scene quickly","there was a variety of different shots" The narrative shows "childhood and childhood friendship", "it fits the genre of the music well" (referring to the narrative). For us this was vey pleasing as it is exactly the message of the video we wanted to get across, the narrative can be seen as quite confusing as it follows no real structure and the gcbse students were able to understand it well. The face that they liked the quick changing scenes implied that we achieved a good amount of cuts that were not too quick but kept the pace of the song up and insured a immersed audience. With the A-Level students we also received many positive comments. some of these were; "I thought it was great actually", "I loved the crisp colours, it was really affective", "I really liked the advanced editing", "It could match up tho them" (professional music videos). The fact that the large majority of the comments we received were positive was very encouraging, very importantly they believed that our music video could easily compare to a professionally made video by a proper music label.

Overall, what we can take from this focus group is that they largely enjoyed the music video and thought that it was very well made with no corners cut. If we were to do it again they would like to see some more thought to go into the 10 second gap to ensure that it matches the rest of the narrative better than what we have. But this dose not take away form the overall success which the music video was.

Uploading our video onto Youtube opens the video up to a much larger audience and allows people all over the world to view and comment on the video. After a few weeks of uploading the video we received a comment which read "Really enjoyed this video. I feel that it perfectly captures the message of the song. The way it is filmed is fitting to the song, you did a good job. Well done mate." This from what we fume is are target market is just another reminder and prof that the music video was an overall success. As he says he believes we have captured the message of the song perfectly it suggests to us that he has been able to understand the idea behind the narrative.

Digipak Poster

Digipack- Disk Construction

Digipak Disk

For the disk i wanted something that didn't look complicated like dome of the other images i had used, I wanted it to look simple and minimalistic but it was extremely important that the image was of very hight quality. I used an image that was taken in the studio with a good camera focusing on josh and the props he was wearing.
  1. The first step was to load the image of josh on to photoshop.
  2. I next found an image of a disk from the internet and transferred it onto photoshop.
  3. After setting the disk shape as a back layer and quick selecting it I rubbed out the parts of the image of josh which were not on the disk template.
  4. Next I drew a cercle in the centre of the disk and put a grey film colour over the top of some of the picture.
  5. Once the disk was complete I added it to the double digipak spread where it would be positioned on the digipak itself.

Digipack- Inside panel 3/4 Construction

Digipak Double Inside Panel

The decision to make a double inside panel came when i was practicing my skills with photoshop and really liked the image with no affects at all. The lighting we had captured with the set in the studio looked so good we did not need any affects on the image itself and so i decided to try and link the image a bit more to the video itself. There is one shot in which Morty is holding the drumsticks whilst they are on fire, because of this I attempted to add fire to the drumsticks myself.

  1. The first step was to slightly cut down the size of the image so to get the corrects size if a double inside cover of a digipak. I did this using the crop tool.
  2. Next I looked through the internet to find the most accurate peace of fire I could as a better peace i could get the easier it would be to add the flames to the image of josh. Once I found a picture with a black background and of high enough quality and moved it into photoshop.
  3. I next cut round the fire by zooming in extremely close to ensure i did not cut any of the peaces indeed off then making it a layer mask to remove it from the background.
  4. For this I dragged the flames over the drumstick and lowered the exposure to make the flames look more realistic and fade the top of the drumstick itself.
  5. To add the image of the disk holder I found the image on the internet and screen showed it. I added it to photoshop and changed the quality of the image to loose the focus a little.
  6. Using Quick Select I removed all of the white so that it only left the outline. Holding sift I was then able to move the disk connector outline into place.

Digipak- Inside Panel 2 Construction

Digipak Inside Panel

The reason i wanted this sort of multiple affect was to reply put across the message of the song and how the same person feels multiple ways at once. The final product is a collection of the same image each with a different affect on it and then spaced out and put together to create this interesting affect.

  1. Starting with an image that was taken in the studio allowed me to stat with a sharper and crisper image that was much easer to quick select and layer mask it.
  2. Once I had this I copied the layer mask twice and put the three images I now had of josh next to each other with the shoulders connecting.
  3. Next I made one image slightly dark and another slightly out of focus while leaving the other one the same.
  4. Holding shift I selected all the images and merged them together this then gave me the affect which i required.

Much the same as the cross for josh, for Morty our second caricature is mostly seen playing the drums. This make the drums a bit of a recognisable trademark for Morty and so it seemed a good idea to have him inside the drums for an inside cover. This also links very will to the image of josh and as the drums are in the video so much the video as well. The audience will recognise Morty as a drummer and so there will be no confusion as to the reason for the image.

  1. The first step was again to cut the image down so using the crop tool I made the image the same size a standard panel on a digipak.
  2. Next I went on to the internet and found a black image of a drum kit that I thought was suitable for the job of being an outline.
  3. I then quick selected the image of the drums once they were on photoshop and made this the top layer.
  4. next i rubbed out the drums so you could see the image of forty through the hole that was now created.

Digipak- Back Cover Construction

Back Panel of Digipak

The inspiration for the back panel came directly from the poster. I decided to do the back however, a little bit different instead of the parts of the image floating away as they do the the digipak poster i wanted them flowing towards the image making it bigger. not much of the process changes although this method makes the time element a little shorter the overall affect of the image looks very high quality. I chose to use a cross as it is a very big prop in our music video which is shown to the audience on many occasions and so is a noticeable shape that will link directly to joshes caricature.

  1. I started with an image of josh that we took in the studio this was again because the image was high quality and very sharp. I cut the image down so that it was the right side for a digipak.
  2. I the screen showed the black image of a cross from google and uploaded it into photoshop.
  3. Going back to the image of josh I duplicated it by pressing command, shift and J. With the second image i then went into filters and liquify. After liquefying the image to fill that whole side of the page I went back a made the first image of josh invisible.
  4. Next I quick selected the shape of the cross and rubbed it out. Moving this layer to the top of the layers it showed some of josh through the gap where the cross used to be.
  5. it was then just a simple has of using small different sized rubbers to remove more of the cross layer to show more of the liquified image underneath.
  6. I then added the topography and some more screenshot images that I used for my record labels and barcode.

Digipak- Front Cover 2 Construction

Front Cover of Digipak

I am very pleased with the end result of my digipak front cover. It matches many conventions but looks very different from most other front covers I have seen. It links to the digipak poster because of the gold colouring and use of font and also has a grate picture of josh that captures the idea of the song.
  1. I started with a picture of josh which we took in a studio with a very good camera. this allowed us to get a very sharp image which made editing on photoshop much quicker.
  2. After i had uploaded the picture to photoshop making the image Black and white by holding shift, plus and delete was the next step I also cut it down to make it the correct size using the crop tool.
  3. Next I copied all the words from the song (stressed out) and input them into a program which created a black and whit sort of poster of them. I screen shotted this and added it to photoshop.
  4. I then quick selected the image of josh and added a layer mask this basically removed josh from the background so that i could apply affects to him.
  5. At this point I took the writing and placed it on top of one part of josh. holding command sift and J I copied the image until there were enough covering the whole of joshes body.
  6. Clicking the filter button in the top corner then automatically shaped writing around josh and got rid of the letters which were not touching him.
  7. Adding the typography was very simple I simply wrote it out in a text box and moved it into the position I liked. After creating the first example i decided thai i wanted some more colour in the image and so added some gold typography.
